ASN Registration

An AS Number (Autonomous System Number) or ASN for short is a unique number assigned by an RIR (Regional Internet Registry) such as RIPE to networks that are looking to:

  • Announce the IP Address Space using the BGP protocol
  • Become Multihomed
  • Employ Traffic Engineering
The ASN application requires an LIR (Local Internet Registry) such as LIR SERVICES to sponsor the application with RIPE NCC. We also offer IP Address Lease to the networks that do not have their own IP space.

Our RIPE ASN Registration service is available to Businesses and Individuals based in the following countries of the RIPE service region:

Please note that the individuals need to be at least 18 years of age (or higher depending on the jurisdiction) to enter into the sponsorship contract with us.

While we are also an APNIC member, we regret that we are unable to offer the ASN Registration in the APNIC service region (Asia Pacific) at this time.

The ASN Registration process is quite involving, and it requires some back and forth between your organisation, ourselves, and RIPE.

The Initial Consultation is the first step of the ASN registration process, where we ask for information that RIPE requires for the ASN Registration. 

Some information that we will need from you are:

  • Your RIPE Person/ORG/Maintainer objects
  • The IP space that you will be advertising using the new ASN
  • Peering information for your BGP peering partners

We will offer guidance on RIPE object creation, IP Space and Peering Partner requirements, to make this process as simple as possible.

We appreciate that some of these might be a little intimidating at first, but our friendly expert team remains available to help you during the entire process.
For us to prepare your ASN request, your organisation will be required to sign the “Assignment Request and Maintenance Contract“, according to the applicable RIPE policy before the ASN application can be submitted to RIPE.

We will also require a valid form of identification such as company registration documents or a government-issued ID card, or a passport in case of natural persons.

The examples of accepted company registration documents are:

  • Certificate of Incorporation;
  • Recent (no older than three (3) months) print out from the business register.

Please also note that you will be required to provide a Certificate of Good Standing for the company issued by the local authorities if your documents are older than three (3) months.

Additionally, RIPE may require a legalised translation of your company documents if these are not issued in English. This usually isn’t necessary for businesses established in the EU. Please contact us if in doubt.

It usually takes 2 business days for RIPE to assign an ASN number. This time starts counting when we submit the ASN Request to RIPE on your behalf. 
 
However, we need to receive all the required documents (such as the company incorporation certificate), the signed RIPE Sponsorship Agreement and the invoice payment before we submit your ASN request to RIPE.
 
Realistically speaking, the whole process takes about one week from start to finish.

Absolutely not!

Our ASN Registration service is designed for organisations who are not-members and does not require you to become a RIPE member or pay the RIPE membership fees.

The only cost to you is as per our pricing table above.

A most common example of a multi-homed network is that it has at least two BGP capable internet connections, such us upstream ISPs.

Currently RIPE allocates 32-bit ASNs, but given proper justification, LIR SERVICES can apply for a 16-bit ASN on your behalf.

 

An example of a proper justification is that that either your organisation’s or your organisation’s upstream provider uses the network equipment does not support 32-bit ASNs.

The ASN will be assigned to your organisation directly, and LIR SERVICES act as an LIR sponsor. Your organisation will be able to edit the ASN entry in RIPE whois directly, without our intervention. However, if you are not sure of something and need help, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Currently, RIPE requires that organisations requesting an ASN Number already have either a /24 of IPv4 address space or a /48 of IPv6 address space. 

If your organisation does not currently own IP address space themselves, we also offer IP Address Lease. 

Alternatively, we can provide a /48 IPv6 PA subnet with your ASN registration to satisfy this requirement. This subnet will be free of charge for as long you have your ASN sponsored with us.
